Sock stash..

I can’t help myself. The longer I look at sock patterns, the more I want to knit them. The more socks I knit, the more I want to buy sock yarn.

When I look back on all the socks I’ve knitted (I haven’t actually knit that many socks, and I’ve given away most of them), I realize that I’ve always used rather “less-than-awesome” yarns. Most of them are knit with yarns that aren’t actually sock yarns. Or acrylics, or even very cheap sock yarns that would wear out too soon.

The first pair of socks I ever knitted were made in 2010. I really should say that these are the first I completed (second sock syndrome). I started with toe-up socks because it seemed more logical. you start with the toe and shape it. Unfortunately I had a very hard time with the turning of the heel. I constantly turned the heel too soon (ending up with socks that were too small for me.

To avoid second sock syndrome I tried knitting both socks at the same time. I haven’t used this technique much, but I must say that it’s quite convenient because you don’t have to think about how long you’ve made the cuff/ foot part. Both socks will be exactly the same. Although it takes a bit more time (well, you ARE knitting two socks at once), and it can be a bit tangly because you work with two balls of yarn at once. Great for at home, not so great for travel IMHO.

I then decided to knit the very popular Jaywalker socks. Of course I had to find the toe-up version, because I was still living in my toe-up is best up phase.

Still too tight. I was so happy with the way it was shaping up. So I frogged this one and moved onto the next sock.

Another sock bites the dust. This one, too, became too tight.

I’m a very stubborn person. I want to be able to do certain things, and I think I should be able to knit socks both toe-up and cuff down. So I don’t give up easily and just keep going on until it finally works out. Except, I wasn’t quite there yet..

Two months later I still had the same problem.

Cute pattern isn’t it? I love it so much! I have to say ย that I really don’t mind all the tries. It’s been a very good way to learn about knitting socks.

It took me about a month or two, but I had finally knit myself a pair of lovely socks for my MIL.

It was time to knit socks for myself and I decided to use the handspun yarn I had made. It was too tightly spun and plied, so I thought it would be nice. I was trying out different styles of toe-up socks and ended up with Skew.

I loved these socks so much I wore them until there was nothing left of them ๐Ÿ™‚

I’m not going through all of the socks I’ve made.. but in total I’ve completed 18 pairs of socks, most of which have been gifted to people around me. I love knitting socks, and apparently I love giving them away just as much ๐Ÿ™‚

The main conclusion is that I’ve knit more socks than other things, and I really enjoy knitting socks. My recent vanilla socks were finished in 2 days, and I’ve been wearing them non-stop ever since (maybe that’s why they wear out so quickly).

I’ve decided to knit a lot of socks in 2014. My goal is at least 2 socks per month, but I might have the chance to knit more this year. Here’s the hard part: I’m only going to knit socks for myself or the BF. I will not give any of these socks away. And that’s really hard (but I need to have more socks and so does the BF).

So to help myself stay motivated (lol) I got myself a little sock stash to get excited over:

I’ve already finished one pair of socks this month, so this is January’s second pair of socks.

For february there’s these yarns to play with:

Dutch Wool Diva Sock Star, in colorway: “loki”

YUMMM! This is going to be good!

Then there’s the Jeans Ball, by Schoppel Wolle. I think this is going to turn out lovely ๐Ÿ™‚

Last but not least: Admiral Ombrรฉ, also by Schoppel Wolle.

I also got another skein of yarn, but since it’s not sock stash I will not post about it just yet ๐Ÿ˜‰

  1. What a great post, and so many lovely socks! Now you’ve inspired me – I really want to be a better sock knitter (I’ve only finished maybe 5 pairs, I think…), so I should put this on my to do-list as well ๐Ÿ™‚
