Here’s my first post on my revived macbook!
WARNING!: the next part contains my geekiness about my Macbook.. plz skip the next part if you don’t like geeks.
Somewhere between three and four years ago I bought me one of those pretty white *new* Macbooks to play study with. I took it with me wherever I went and we became real close friends ^__^
Everything was well in liliville untill the university stuff became more and more serious.. each year there would be a new software version which would be bigger and heavier than the previous version and so the macbook got tired and said: “leave me alone!” *sad face*
Ok that’s not exactly how it went.. it was more like this: it’s getting old.. and well.. the HDD had a max. capacity of 60Gb.. which is.. well.. NOTHING… apple… WTF!
Anyway, I guess that was normal in those days… *gets flashbacks of prehistoric people with rocks and stuff* (I should make drawings LOL). Anyway.. so I bought me a new 250Gb hard drive and replacd the old one.. and for the first time in 3-4 years I’m working on a clean Macbook again.. WHAT A DIFFERENCE! düde… I should’ve done this earlier…
Ok I’m done 🙂
I’ve been doing some thinking about the ways that I can incorporate my geekness into my knitting… and then I found the answer: Amigurumiiii! I’ve seen them on the interwebs for a very long time but I’ve never really felt the urge to actually knit/ crochet but ever since I’ve played Little Big Planet I’m addicted 😐 So much even that I’ve actually knit my very own Sackboy
Isn’t he the cutest thing ever?? <3
I’ve already heard The Man say he wants one a few for the workplace so I’ll have enough to do this summer 😛
Now that it’s done I can see a lot of things than could’ve been done better but I’m very happy with the way this one turned out 🙂 I’ve actually already knit him a little sunflower ‘hat’ but it’s not done yet so we’ll have to wait for another post 🙂
As you may remember me talking about my grandmother giving me her stash. I’m still very happy with the yarn and I’ve already made sunrise with the silk yarn she gave me but I wanted to give her something that said ‘thank you’ in a better way than just words. Sooo I knit her a hat *smile*
It’s not just a hat 🙂 It’s the same starburst hat I knit for myself a loong way back 😛 It only took me two days this time so that’s a nice improvement 🙂
Anyway, it’s funny to see the difference between the first one and this one. When I made the first one I was still knitting in Persian Style and later on switched to Continental Style knitting. The difference is quite big and I have to say I like this one better than the first one 🙂
I thought the summer would make me productive.. instead I see it’s making me lazy lazy lazy 😛 I’m enjoying the ‘real life’ and forgetting about my bloglife 😛 I’ve had a rough time this year and I desperately needed some time off so I guess this is it right? 😛 Anyway, it’s helped me realize what’s important for me and what isn’t 🙂 so I guess that’s worth a lot xD but still… 5 more weeks to go before it all starts again… blërg..
Obviously I haven’t been knitting as much as I would’ve wanted to but that’s because of the weather.. it’s too darn hot to be knitting…. :S it makes my hands all sweaty and my pretty knits sticky… blërg..
so here’s what I’ve been upto this past week… I’ve been knitting the arisaig 2x2rib for almost 8″ instead of the 6,5″ called for in the pattern. I like the pattern but I’m superscared it’ll become loose, so here’s where the long ribbing section comes in. It took me 3 whole days to actually FIND a set of 2.5mm needles for the lace pattern and what do I do…? I LEAVE them at my moms house… blërg..
I’ve also been working on the Anne Elliot spencer… I tried it out with the pretty silver new yarn! it was very pretty and I really liked how the yarn showed the pattern.. but I speek in past tense because I frogged the thing 3 times and then gave up… why you ask? I miscalculated it 3 times…… blërg..
Yea.. then there was the shipwreck shawl… it takes forever…. and then.. because I have these microscopic beads I can only place near 1000 at a time on the yarn.. if I put more the yarn breaks because of the weight and the fact that I’m constantly pushing the beads back and it get’s all worn an stuff… blërg..
haha lol no but serieously I’ve really been enjoying the summer these past two weeks and this post was just a tryout for my new word ‘blërg’ and I think it’s a keeper 🙂
One week later.. On one side I feel guilty for not posting for a whole week.. but on the other hand I’m enjoying my time in the sun with a nice cup of coffee and a nice cool breeze through my knit 🙂 I’ve taken this week off from doing anything and I’ve decided to take some time for myself and just relaxt, knit and play games on the playstation 3 / xbox360.
Anyway, for the few of you that are left after reading this ‘shocking’ truth about me: here’s an update on the Shipwreck shawl and the new project: Arisaig. I’ve arrived at section 7 and I’ve been adding beads to the knit like crazy 😀 I’m a poor student and after a lot of research I came to the conclusion that I just can’t afford luxurious Czech glass beads so I went for the old-skool cheapo kiddy stuff. Yea.. the ones they sell at toys ‘r us, for little girls… lol.. they’re plastic I think and a bit smaller than the pattern calls for, but since my shawls being knit with Malabrigo Lace I think I can get away with it 🙂
The beads are pretty small and vary in sizes and tho it doesn’t look that supergreat yet, I have the feeling that once it’s been blocked, they’re going to look just fine 🙂 I’m putting a lot more of them in the knit as well.. See the beads I’m using almost have no weight, they’re very light and small so I’ll need a lot more than just 5000 to get a nice weight.
For now I’m placing them every other round, and I’m thinking on making them more random the farther I go and have them form some sort of gradient, but I’ll have to see how many I’ve got left in the end.
Knitting the Shipwreck shawl is great but I have to say that after a few days it gets a little boring and I started on the backside of the Arisaig. I did some swatching in stockinette, 2x2rib and in the lace pattern and decided the pattern looked best when knitted with US0/2.0mm needles. I get this nice gauge difference and first started to calculate 28×40 to 35×60.. after a while I just decided to wing it and chose the medium pattern which will eventually grow into something between xs and s. This because I’m a fan of tight knits and tight fitting clothes. So far I’ve been right and the thing fits nicely around my back from side to side and I just hope I can fix other problems with blocking 🙂
it’s small but it might be visible, on the left: the starting of arisaig in US0/2.0mm needles, on the right: an experimental swatch in US4/3.0mm
After a long time of doubting and overcoming my initial fears I finally cast on the Shipwreck Shawl I saw in Knitty! To experienced knitters it might seem like a simple shawl, but for me it was intimidating. I’ve knit simple things like uhm.. sweatbands and simple rectangular scarves… I’m not even counting those because I don’t consider that to be ‘real knitting’ since I did those when I was a kid. I just sat next to my mom and started knitting long rectangles in plain stockinette… I even have proof of that when I look through my mom’s stash.. there’s meters and meters of plain stockinette pieces in there which my mom never frogged. Sentimental value I think…
So to get back to the story: I was intimidated because I’ve always wanted to knit lace because <drool>it’s so incredibly cool that one long piece of thread and two sticks can make something so delicate and beautiful!</drool>
Anyways, I cast on and was totally shocked at how simple it actually is…. the cast-on method is explained very clearly and the pattern is just fantastic 😀 I’m searching for some nice 2/2.5mm seed beads right now for section 7 and can’t wait for this one to be blocked and wrapped around me xD
This is going to be a long post since I’ve got a lot of free time on my hands in the summer vacation and there’s a lot of knitting going on 😀 I ordered another hank of malabrigo sock in terracotta despite my budgetary problems (who needs food anyway lol) and decided it would become an arisaig for sure 😀 Tho I must say I can’t decide yet if I want to do it with shorter sleeves (like the one in here) or the original on Knitty by designer: Ysolda. Thankfully I don’t have to decide what to do yet, I’ll probably do the sleeves last anyway..
There’s however one problem I’m facing right now.. I have one set of 2.0mm needles and two projects to knit.. I could knit the Anne Elliot Spencer with the 1.5mm needles and the arisaig with the 2, but I’d have to make a swatch first. I kind liked the 2.0mm swatch, but maybe it’ll look even better on smaller needles… I’ve got enough yarn in my stash to make two so that’s not the problem.. the problem is however knitting the spencer with frikkin’ 1,5mm needles…. -_-‘ what the hell.. it’ll make a ‘short’ project into this huuuge thing… *sigh*
I’d like to finish this post with a happy picture of my dad. A few days ago we celebrated his birthday and since he doesn’t like to get any presents for his birthday we decided to bake him a mercedes cake. My dad owns this (nearly) classic old mercedes and he totally loves his car, so we made him a copy of his car.. w00t 😀 it was a lot of fun for to do but the smile on his face made the whole thing completely worth it 😀
Oi Oi ! what a treat! today we have two FO’s to show off! w00t!
so here’s the first:
US2 1/5 – 3.0mm
When I first started the first onerva my mom saw it and said she totally liked it and gave me this huge smile. Since I’ve become a totally happy knitter I told her I’d knit her one too, and so I did. It needed to be a bit bigger for my mom to cover the boobage and it had to be in a little less ‘explosive’ colors because she needs to be able to wear it at the office as well.
The second FO is my very first design called Sunrise. Named after beginning of the day because I hoped this project would inspire me to make more and more designs..
Freakish 100% silk yarn
US2 1/2 – 3.0mm
The pattern is actually so basic you can’t even call it a pattern… but still it’s my very first very own design and even tho it’s supersuper simple and a monkey can make it I’m still very proud to present it to da world *insert holy music here*
One problem is that it’s quite see through.. and I think I’ll probably only wear it on the beach or going to the beach wearing my bikini top in the summer, and over some tight other shirt in the winter 🙂 maybe I won’t even wear it.. I don’t know, I’ll find out later I guess 🙂
